The culprit is sugar in the diet. The North American diet is high in carbohydrates and processed foods such as bread, pasta, corn, and rice. This causes the pancreas to produce an exaggerated amount of insulin which stays in the body and stores calories as fat. An overproduction of insulin may lead to hypoglycemia or low glycemia, which in turn may induce constant sugar cravings and weight gain.

One of the core principles of the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method is protecting vital lean mass while the body unlocks stored fat for energy.

The body has 3 energy reserves: glycogen , muscle, and fat. The core principle of the Ideal Protein Protocol is to deplete the glycogen reserves completely in order to compel the body into consuming its fat reserve to burn calories.

Our first source of energy is Glycogen. After 3 days of reducing the intake of carbohydrates, the body depletes the Glycogen reserve and simultaneously goes to the protein and fat reserves for energy.

How do we encourage the body to burn its fat reserves, but support its muscle mass reserves if both are depleted simultaneously?

If you lose muscle while dieting, you may impair your ability to burn calories post-diet, as your body uses muscle mass to burn calories. The muscle is protected by consuming our high quality protein foods, thus forcing the body to only use the stored fat as energy.
