This time of year we find ourselves sharing more than just meals or gifts, but spending meaningful time with family and friends. Turn your interactions into opportunities to build confidence and your self-esteem. It’s important for you to improve self-esteem to help bring out the best in others. According to the MayoClinic, “if you have low self-esteem, harness the power of your own thoughts and beliefs to change how you feel about yourself.” Here are a few tips to get you started in the right direction of realizing your worth and value and improve self-esteem:
Stop being your own worst critic!
We all have that little voice inside constantly reviewing our actions and inactions, often dictating our motivation and mood. Find ways to minimize the critical voice and replace it with more helpful thoughts. Try to refocus your thoughts to something more constructive and positive.
Take a self-appreciation break.
This is a simple habit. In a journal or on a note pad, take two minutes a day to write down what you like and appreciate about yourself. After a month, review your list and be pleased at all the things you do to influence your motivation
Do the right thing.
It may be as simple as getting up from the couch and going for a walk or maybe seeing the opposite side of judgmental situation, but doing the right thing comes from inside. Be true to who you are and remember the things you appreciate about yourself.
You’ve probably heard your mother say, “treat others the way you would want to be treated.” Mom is right; show kindness to others and you will have a better opinion of yourself and your kindness will most likely be reciprocated.
Try something new.
When you try something new, challenge yourself to go outside your comfort zone and your opinion of yourself goes up. Find new things to discover centered around your interests. These new discoveries will increase your self-esteem and confidence and bring balance to your life.
